25-05-08 Pre-wiring

This weekend I had hoped to get all the pre-wiring done and also fit some Insulco Acousti-therm batts for some of the rooms.
Well you know what they say… “The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry”

On Sat I got out to the house nice and early just as the sun was trying to get through the fog.
A good friend had kindly offered to come out and help and we were able to:
- install all the cables for the video intercoms
- install CAT5e data cables to all bedrooms, rumpus, family, study and games room
- install all the Home Theatre cables and speaker wires

The plan for Sun was to go out reasonably early again and knock off any remaining wiring, install the power packs for the Video intercoms and install the wall batts.
Started the car and I had no power steering – Damn! 3 hrs later after I had removed the offending part, sourced a new one and fitted it, I was back on the road to the house.
With the remaining day I was able to finish off the wiring which by the way had grown overnight as Lou had requested a few additional power points throughout the house (Did I say 'a few'?).

At this stage I will probably fit the batts next weekend after the inspection which is due this Thu/Fri.

Many thanks Sean for you help! No doubt we will be calling on you sometime in October :-)

Sorry folks, no photos this time.

Things never work to plan - but at least you got some of it done. How long until plaster goes up? I had loads of trouble with the sound insulation shifting before the plaster went up. Looking forward to some pictures!

Hi T&L, It was probably good that you didn't have time for the insulation, 'F' told us not to put any insulation in before the frame straightening was completed. I'm assuming that is the inspection you are having Thurs/Fri?
We are just up the road and Mike is an expert at insulation now, just message him when you need a hand ;-)

That is great that you are allowed to do your own wiring, I feel we would not have any hope if we asked for that sort of thing. Are you even doing your own power points???

Hi B&P and M&M, what did you guys use to hold the wall insulation up in the cavity? And yes our pre-plaster inspection should be this Thur or Fri. Gonna try to catch up with 'F' as well soon for the first time. Plaster should be going up I assume late next week?

Hi D&L, we are allowed to add any electricals as long as you don't hook them up. All of the cables have been laid in the walls/ceiling and have been taped up and marked. I have added stud plates and marked the floor as to where they are located so once the plaster goes up I can just pop a hole through and drag the wire out. I will be taking countless photos/video next weekend as to where all the wires and pipes are located for the future. I have a sparky who will be connecting all of the wires post handover along with installing all of the downlights upstairs and adding the external lights.

With the installation I found it easier to cut slightly bigger and push\stuff in place. Thats what the installation guys did too.

Sounds like you did a great job in getting all that done, shame about the car though! Hoping our SS lets us do all this too when the time comes. Are the sound batts the same as the Bradford Sound Screen? Thanks for posting all the info, I'm taking notes for our house, Steve has alot of electricians at his work and he's been told by the Boss that we can use one of them. Poor bugger doesn't know what he is in for! Toni

Hi Toni, thats good to know you have a sparky available.

Yes, Soundscreen batts are very much the same as Acousti-therm batts. They are both glasswool batts, can reduce noise transfer by up to 6dB (equivalent of 70%), provide good thermal insulation, are both non-flammable and have a lifetime guarantee.
